![]() “Brand trust is among the most important factors people consider when shopping for outdoor products for their homes and is something we work every day to earn and retain.” “We are thrilled to have been recognized once again as the most trusted decking brand,” said Leslie Adkins, vice president of marketing and ESG development for Trex Company. This is the third year in a row that Trex ® has earned the #1 ranking in the organization’s annual brand trust study. As you browse the decking ratings, keep in mind that their ratings represent performance after two years, not three.) Unless otherwise noted, the prices below are per linear foot.WINCHESTER, Va.-( BUSINESS WIRE)- Trex Company, the world’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative composite decking and railing, and leader in high-performance, low-maintenance outdoor living products has been named the 2023 America’s Most Trusted ® Composite Decking brand, according to a nationwide study by Lifestory Research. (Note that three composite decking products in CR’s tests-Envision Evergrain, Fiberon Paramount, and Veranda Decking Board-are now in their third test year. Cleaning guidance varies, especially with regard to pressure washing, so check the maker’s website for tips about your specific model.įor a look at all the considerations, start with our decking buying guide.ĬR members can jump right to our complete decking ratings or read on for the very best composite decking from our tests. The extra weight of composite planks can make them more difficult to handle if you’re doing the job yourself, Handel says.Īnd even a composite deck that resists staining will need to be cleaned periodically to rid it of everyday dirt and grime. (We also tested western red cedar, ironwood, and redwood.) And most choices are more expensive and heavier than traditional natural pine. Most composite decking models did a top-notch job of resisting staining from ketchup, mustard, and other common spills.īut some products offered far less resistance to slips, flexing, and sag in our tests. Our tests turned up benefits and drawbacks to using composite decking.Īmong the nonwood decking choices, which also included aluminum and plastic, we found composite to be best for the look of wood without the need to apply wood stain. We assess those samples yearly for three years, evaluating their appearance and retesting for all the attributes above, to see how age and exposure to the elements affect overall performance. And we send more than a dozen samples of each material to two areas with extreme climates: hot and dry Arizona, and Florida, where the humidity presents a different challenge to certain materials. We drop weights of various sizes on the surface of each board to see which samples dent on impact. We also evaluate each sample’s slip resistance, which is very important if you’re installing a deck near a pool. Next, we size up which materials resist staining from spilled ketchup, mustard, and other common items you might use while eating outside. That ensures that boards won’t bow or bend if you’re entertaining a crowd or if you park a heavy grill in a particular spot all summer long. We use specialized instruments to test each decking sample for resistance to flexing. Consumer Reports’ performance tests address these factors. Ideally, the composite decking you choose will last, look good, and remain safe for years. (But based on current recycling technology, that product’s destination after a typical life span of 25 years is still likely to be a landfill.) The manufacturers claim that many of the products we tested are made primarily from recycled materials-recycled plastic grocery bags, for instance. “Manufacturers usually use a few different molds to make their composites, so there’s some pattern variety,” he says. That doesn’t mean composite decking looks boring, says Rich Handel, the engineer who tests decking for Consumer Reports. The woodlike grain lacks irregularities like knots that can show up in the real thing. That would be expensive to duplicate in solid wood decking.Īesthetics are a factor, too, especially if you like a uniform look. For instance, some planks are flexible enough to be heated and shaped, allowing you to create, say, rounded corners, railings, or a border for a kidney-shaped pool. Upgraded composite options will still cost considerably more than real wood.Ĭomposite decking has other advantages. A single 16-foot pine decking board was selling for nearly $26, only $6 less than you’d pay for a board of Trex Enhance. We compared the two options at a Lowe’s near our headquarters in Yonkers, N.Y.

![]() But the courts bought it: Babe Ruth sued the candy maker and lost.įortunately, the quality of the candy bar is less debatable. It would be like if I debuted a line of microwavable frozen curries in the Bay Area under the brand Stephen’s Curry, then claimed I’d never heard of the Golden State Warriors. This makes literally no sense, as Babe Ruth was hugely popular at the time, and Ruth Cleveland had been dead for 17 years when the bar came out. It’s been posited that the Baby Ruth candy bar, introduced in 1921, was named after President Grover Cleveland’s daughter, Ruth, and not baseball legend Babe Ruth, who was in the prime of his career when the candy hit the market. Why more candy bars don’t add cookies is a mystery to me: a crisp, crumbly cookie is a perfect foil to sticky caramel. Twix isn’t salty enough but is still one of the better candy bars due to the crunch of its bottom cookie layer. The Twix candy bar owes an incalculable debt of gratitude to the Swiss one-hit wonders Yello (and I might be stretching the definition of “hit” in this case), who created the song “Oh Yeah,” featured in the movie “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” as well as several late-’80s Twix commercials. I like the sticky nougat chunks dotted throughout that invariably end up deep in your back molars. The Toblerone has an amusing shape - three-dimensional triangles joined together - and the chocolate certainly tastes richer and milkier than your average U.S. That’s how badly they wanted to change the name. Fun fact: “Mondelez” is literally a nonsense word made up by employees and doesn’t refer to anything. ![]() Toblerone, while still made in Switzerland, is owned by the Illinois-based Mondelez International, formerly known as Kraft Foods. Let’s give it up for the Toblerone bar: that thing we buy at the airport duty-free store when we have some euros left over from a trip, but not enough for it to be worth exchanging them back to dollars. They successfully convinced a generation that candy is actually a good thing to eat when you’re hungry and that it may even fuel your Olympics and discus-throwing aspirations.īut peanuts, caramel and nougat are a combination that’s hard to argue with, and the classic brown-and-blue design remains attractive to the eye after all these decades. Snickers, introduced in 1930, has a done a great job with its marketing over the years, etching the slogan “ Packed with peanuts, Snickers really satisfies” into my television-addled brain at a very young age. The chewy center can get to be a little much, but it’s a small price to pay for this candy bar par excellence. Why more companies haven’t keyed in to the magical Salt + Sweet = Good equation is confounding, but it makes it all the more satisfying when you find a bar as good as a Payday, a caramel core rolled in salted peanuts. And for that reason, and nearly that reason alone, the Payday bar is extremely good. ![]() It’s saltier than Twitter whenever Bret Stephens publishes a column. I used to nibble off the waxy chocolate outside as a kid and eat the candy core in one go. Remember the good old days when our favorite TV shows used to sell out? Not the sneaky sponsored content of today but, like, very obviously, shamelessly sell out? Bart Simpson shilling for Butterfinger created some pretty good commercials back in the ’80s and ’90s, such as when he illustrated for his friend Milhouse the four food groups: sandwich group, cow group (milk), jungle group (banana), and Butterfinger group.īutterfinger remains one of the best candy bars out there: the thin, brittle candy layers taste strongly of peanut butter, and there’s a great saltiness to the bar. The rest of the bar combines seemingly every other good thing you find in other bars: chocolate, caramel, peanut butter and peanuts. Pretzels! Of course! The simple, modest pretzel does so much by adding salt and texture, two essential components to a great candy bar. We’ve now got the unrelated Take 5 candy bar, which manages to crack the candy bar code with the addition of pretzel. We already loved Dave Brubeck’s “Take Five,” the jazz piece in 5/4 time that is really, really hard to whistle. The number of remaining blank pages a passport should have is also an issue. The FCO suggests you have at least two blank pages in your passport on arrival. South African authorities also officially state that travellers need have only one blank passport page remaining, but some officials insist on two blank pages. Outside the EU, things can get a little more tricky. Naturally, this is not a good idea and you should plan ahead. If the travel document is valid, you are in the clear."īut what if your passport is due to expire the very next day? The European Commission says: "Even in the extreme example mentioned, of expiry the very next day, you could still use your national ID card (where issued) to travel back." In the case of countries, such as the UK, that don't have ID cards, you would have to contact your nearest embassy for a new or temporary passport. The advice on the Foreign and Commonwealth office website is brief. So, should we be concerned about our passport's remaining lifespan? Most believe that if a passport is valid for the duration of their trip, they will be free to travel – unless their destination requires an additional visa.
